How do I choose a therapist?

The therapeutic relationship is the main catalyst for change and how effective therapy is. Therefore, finding a therapist who is a good fit for you is very important.  Generally, you should feel comfortable with them and feel that they have created a safe and non-judgemental space. You may feel nervous at the first few sessions but that should dissipate as therapy continues.

It is also important to note that the relationship is mutually created and evolves over time. This means that certain dynamics can be shifted by giving your therapist feedback. Feedback may include things like you prefer to be asked more questions or you need concepts further explained.

What can I expect at the first session?

During your first appointment I will ask you to review and sign a consent form. The consent form details aspects of my practice some of which include, supervision, cancellation policies and limits to confidentiality. At this point or any point throughout feel free to ask any questions you may have about myself, my practice, my work etc.

Once the paperwork has been completed I will encourage you to share what brings you to psychotherapy and general details about your life. Near the end of the session we may discuss how the session went for you and what you would like to accomplish in therapy.

Our following appointments will involve working towards the goals you have outlined – how this happens depends on you and your individual needs.
